When my husband and I were engaged, we used to go to open houses and just dream up what we could do with old houses. We would talk about what we would do in each room and how our future kids would play. We would fully re-envision that old house in perfection. We never purchased one, because they were all money pits. They were imperfect. They were not worth our time. Sometimes, those homes were fully destroyed by what the tenants had done or they had been neglected. Sometimes, those old homes had become condemned and had been deemed unsafe by the damaged ensued in their lifetime.
I love that Pastor Michael described us as “condemned homes”. I really spent time thinking about this idea of myself as a condemned home. I, left to my own heart, my own way of thinking, my own selfishness, had destroyed the purpose that God created me for. When I made my life about “me”, my world was small, my sight was short and truthfully, I was empty. I was constantly seeking for something new to fill the God sized hole in my heart.
I think about Jesus, knowing what was coming to him. He knew the suffering physically and emotionally and spiritually he would undergo. He would be forsaken by the Father for us. Yet, he had purpose. He did the will of the Father. Through all the heartache and pain and trouble, he had a purpose.
Jesus didn’t come to condemn, but to save. He was the carpenter that came to repair the “condemned” homes. He restores and builds the original home back to it’s intended beauty. He takes us and makes us whole again.
Hallelujah! What a beautiful Savior we serve! And once we are walking in Him, He sets us up and gives us purpose. We are to share the news of Christ by our lifestyle, the way we talk, the way we take an interest in others, the way we serve, even the way we worship, etc. We are to share our Risen Savior and all the great things He has done for us. Our purpose is to do the will of Our Father and to share the Good News of the restoration He has done in our lives.
